2022 BMW X5 Vs. 2022 Lexus RX: What Is The Most Sophisticated Luxury SUV To Lease?

German or Japanese? They can’t be any unending debate to have when deciding to lease a luxury SUV than to weigh your choices between leasing the sophisticated but pricey German machines like the BMW X5 and leasing the affordable and stylish Japanese Lexus RX.

The BMW X5 and Lexus RX share so many traits that make it a little tougher for most shoppers to decide which one is best for them to lease. From a distance, these two luxury midsize SUVs afford a sensational styling, and when you step inside the cabin, you’ll be greeted with many lavish features, sophisticated amenities, and paradisiacal rides. But on a closer look, these two popular luxury midsize SUVs show glaring dissimilarities to distinguish them.

Whether you end up leasing the 2022 X5 or the 2022 RX, you can be sure of getting one of the best rides around. But then, what is the coolest luxury midsize SUV to lease today in Miami? Is it the 2022 X5 or the 2022 RX?

What’s New?

Nearly two decades ago, BMW launched the X5 as the brand’s first SUV. Now in its fourth generation that debuted in 2019, the X5 is still waxing strong by the year, growing to become one of the most compelling choices in the midsize luxury SUV class.

For 2022, the X5 receives minor changes. Nevertheless, it still provides the exciting acceleration, spacious and comfortable cabin, and a swath of tech features. This year’s model of the X5 sees the introduction of the X5 Black Vermilion version of the xDrive40i, which will be available for only a year and comes with flashy styling in and out and posh amenities. In other places, wireless charging is not offered as a standard feature, while the Convenience package that features remote start, four-zone automatic climate control, Wi-Fi hotspot is no longer part of the 40i models. Also, front and rear heated seats, two-axle air suspension are no longer part of the optional features, but BMW has thought it generous to add a new Climate Comfort package that sports front and rear heated seats, heated armrests and steering wheel, and four-zone climate control as optional.

On the other hand, the 2022 RX remains a strong choice in the crowded luxury SUV class. Like the X5, the RX is one of the longest-standing SUVs in the midsize luxury SUV segment. Now in its fourth generation that was launched in 2016, the RX swags into the 2022 Lexus lineup with no significant changes.

For 2022, the RX receives some minor touches that include the introduction of three new paint color options— Grecian Water blue, Cloudburst Gray, and Iridium silver. There are also available front foglights. Finally, Lexus has reintroduced the Black Line special edition models to the 2022 RX lineup.

No doubt, it’s been long since the RX got a fresh touch, and we can’t help but think that Lexus is surely working on giving us an all-new RX model soon. For the main time, the RX still remains a desirable luxury SUV.

Powertrain And Transmission

Both the 2022 X5 and the 2022 RX offer a range of robust powertrain options, but if you need a more powerful engine with more horses, you shouldn’t have a second thought before settling with the 2022 BMW X5 lease deal.

The 2022 X5 comes standard with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine and a 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical system that combines to produce 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. Under the hood of the M50i model is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that delivers 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. If you want more power, the BMW X5M and X5M Competition have so much to fill your taste. Lastly, there’s the plug-in hybrid xDrive45e with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and electric motor to give out 389 horses and 443 lb-ft.

All 2022 X5 powertrains are hooked to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the AWD (xDrive), except the base that comes standard with the RWD (sDrive40i).

Like the X5, the 2022 RX offers many powertrain options. The RX350 model is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 295 hp and 267 lb-ft while also giving out 290 hp and 263 lb-ft in the 350L models. The plug-in hybrid models (RX450h and 450hl) utilize a 3.5-liter V6 and electric motor that combines to generate 308 hp/274 lb-ft. Instead of using the eight-speed automatic of the non-hybrid models, these hybrid models send power to the AWD through a CVT automatic transmission.

Handling And Performance

The X5 and RX ride smoothly and afford peppy acceleration, but the X5 is a lot quicker and can outpace most luxury SUVs in the class. It is also more fun to drive than the RX.

Leasing the 2022 X5 gives you a midsize luxury SUV that delivers a smooth and quiet ride and nimble handling. This BMW SUV also soaks up all road imperfection thanks to its adaptive suspension. Like the X5, the RX also affords a smooth and decent acceleration, but it’s not as fun to drive as the X5 or delivers the same ride comfort.

Fuel Economy

The RX may not be as quick as the X5, but if you want an SUV that gives you fewer stops at the gas station, leasing the 2022 Lexus RX fits the description best. However, the X5 comes very close. The base powertrain earns an EPA estimated 21/26 mpg city/highway on RWD models and 20/26 mpg on AWD models. The RX returns 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with the base FWD.

Interior

Inside, both SUVs impress with their finely finished interior, high-quality materials, and posh amenities. However, like any other more expensive SUV, the X5 offers more standard state-of-the-art amenities and provides a long list of upgrades.

Both SUVs also offer a spacious and comfortable cabin with a seating capacity that goes from five with the standard two-row seats to seven with the available third-row seats. The third-row seats of both SUVs are not a good place for adult passengers. And though the Lexus RX offers an extended-length RX L model, the 2022 X5 affords more passenger and cargo space than the RX.
