Say Hello To The All-New 2022 Mercedes EQS: Complete Review

Like nearly every other automaker, Mercedes Benz is also going electric, but in a big way. First, it announced that its first six electric vehicles will arrive within two years and will be marketed under the Mercedes EQ marque. After the announcement, the iconic German automaker of luxurious cars has shown it’s not just all talks, as it reveals its first fully electric vehicle, the EQS.

Call it the electric version of the gas-powered S-Class sedan, and you are not wrong. The all-new 2022 Mercedes EQS is one of the fanciest electric vehicles you could lease today in Miami. Like the regular S-Class, Mercedes packs all its latest luxury features and in-car tech in the new EQS, giving this electric sedan a sophisticated and classy interior with a roomy cabin, exemplary cargo hold, and graceful performance.

If the S-Class sedan has set the luxury standard for decades, not only in the Mercedes lineup but for most cars in its segment, the all-new 2022 EQS is set to achieve the same in the luxury electric car class.

Powertrain & Performance

A 107.8-kWh lithium-ion battery powers all 2022 EQS. However, the EQS450+ models combine this battery pack and a single electric motor to produce 329 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes claims this electric powertrain configuration can send this EQS from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds.

The EQS 580 4Matic features the same battery pack but pairs it with two electric motors, one on each axle, combining a power output of 516 hp and 611 lb-ft of torque. This setup delivers more instantaneous power.

Mercedes equipped every all-new EQS with an adaptive air suspension. Despite its size, it’s still easy to maneuver around tight spots, thanks to its standard rear-axle-steering system. This Mercedes electric sedan effortlessly blends thrilling performance with a cosseting and quiet ride quality.

Range & Charging

All EQS models come with a 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. In the base EQS450+, EPA estimates it to go for 350 miles range on a single charge, while the EQS580 gets 340 miles of range.

The 2022 Mercedes EQS supports 200 kW on a DC fast charger and can charge the battery from 10 to 80% in 35 minutes. It’s also equipped with a 9.6 kW onboard charger. With a Level 2 charger (240V wall outlet), the battery can charge from 10 to 100% in about 11 hours.

Interior, Cargo

Like the brand’s flagship S-Class, the all-new 2022 Mercedes EQS boasts an opulent and beautiful interior, outfitted with high-end materials, supple leathers, and a swath of desirable features. Its quiet interior is also very spacious. The EQS also sports a generous cargo hold.

Perhaps the interior’s highlight is the 56-inch-long Hyperscreen, consisting of a 12.3-inch gauge cluster behind the steering, 17.7-inch central touchscreen, and 12.3-inch passenger-side touchscreen. Its 12.8-inch touch screen runs on the latest version of the MBUX system with enhanced voice control.

Safety

The all-new 2022 EQS is packed with a long list of standard driver-assist features including,

  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic parking assist
  • Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Speed limit recognition and limiting
  • Driver attention monitoring
  • Surround-view parking camera system

The 2022 Mercedes EQS sedan is the flagship model of the brand’s electric future, and it comes in two flavors. A lineup of more EVs will likely be followed, including an EQA, EQE, EQB, and EQG.
